Textiles Committee
initiatives
on
GI: Textiles
Committee
(TC),
Ministry
of
Textiles,
Govt.
of
India
working
for
the
development
of
growth
of
textile
sector
initiated
the
GI
facilitation
in
the
year
2004.
The
initiative
further
strengthened
under
TC
and
UNCTAD-India
collaborative
project,
“Strategies
& Preparedness
for
Trade
&
Globalisation
in
India”
been
in
the
forefront
in facilitating
“IPR Protection
of
Unique
Textiles
&
Handicrafts
through
GI”.
The
Committee
has
facilitated
the
registration
of
“Pochampally
Ikat”
of
Andhra
Pradesh (now
Telangana),
the
first
textile
product
registered
in
the
country
in
2004.
In
order
to
facilitate
the
IPR
protection
of
Unique
Textiles
through
GI
Act,
the
Textiles
Committee
adopting
a
five
pronged
approach
during
last
16
years.
These
are
1.
Capacity
Building
through
awareness
Workshops/
Conferences; 3. Study
& Documentation
of the
selected
products
for
establishing
historical
origin,
area
of
production,
production
process
and
uniqueness,
as
required
for
registration
of the
product. 4. Facilitating
GI
registration
by
preparing
application,
defending
the
application
before
the
Consultative
Committee
of
GI Registry,
etc. 5.
Post–GI
impact
studies
for
quantifying
benefits
and
Post-GI
Initiatives
for
converting IPR
into
tangible
benefits
for
stakeholders.
